What do you do when you've got all the parts to build a carbon trike except for one, the tie rod? This is what we did. Make sure to check out other great stories at https://www.performercycles.com/recumbent-bike-trike-blog/
In the middle of August, George and Glenn headed for Performer's Japan office to get some things done. One thing to do was to get the new carbon trike, Cantus, assembled and have some fun with it on the local velodrome. We are planning to put a number of models side by side on the track to compare performance. We'd be looking to put a low racer against Cantus and then against a professional racer on a conventional racing bike. But that's a tale for another day.
The model in the video is actually a Cantus prototype so you won't see the funky carbon rear wheel as George goes ahead with the assembly. It was a standard assembly procedure, no major issues, well, apart from the workshop which is still lacking quite a few specialist tools.
But you can do a lot with the basics so things were going really well, no drama until we realized the tie rod had not made it into the box. Apparently it had been set aside when the prototype was taken apart to be shipped to Japan and was not included in the box.
So George headed down to the local hardware store and finds a length of steel tubing that can be improvised into a tie rod of sorts, so at least some riding can be done while the original tie rod is express shipped across from Taiwan.
Check out the video to see how George went about solving this problem.
